LIVING
LETTERS Clearly, you are a letter from Christ prepared by us. It is written not
with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved
not on stone, but on human hearts. – 2 Corinthians 3:3 (NLT)
In ancient times it was common to be sent with a letter of
recommendation when you were leaving one community for another. This was
especially true in Christian circles, where many disreputable types had
infiltrated the church and were using the name of Christ as a guise to
con money from susceptible Christians. The letter was given as proof
that the newcomer was who he or she claimed to be.
The Apostle Paul had
no formal letter to present to validate his ministry. What he had was
much better – the proof of lives changed as a result of the message he
was preaching. The Corinthians were a living testimony to the truth of
the Gospel.
The same is true for believers today. Our lives are what we
present to the world as a recommendation that God’s Word is true. We
are each a living advertisement for what we claim to believe in. Our
level of influence for Christ depends greatly on the message we preach
by the way we live life on a day-to-day basis. |
