THE DIVINE
EXCHANGE “…But among you it
should be quite different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must
be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must
become your slave. For even I, the Son of
Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life
as a ransom for many." – Matthew 20:26-28 (NLT)
As Jesus’ disciples argued over who would be the greatest in
the coming Kingdom, the Lord sets them straight with another paradox –
the lower you go the higher you
will climb. Self-induced slavery is the name of the game if you want
to be great in the eyes of God. Of course, Jesus was living out this
principle in their midst as He faced the upcoming Cross. God in human
form had humbled Himself to the point that He could face us nose to
nose. When it comes to servanthood, Jesus is the poster child for all
generations to follow.
Jesus not only came to be like us, He came to free us from our
bondage to the Dark One. The ransom price to set us free was nothing
less than the death of Christ. No bargaining, no beating around the
bush, it was a dead God on a tree or nothing. Jesus, as the servant of
servants, the slave of all, willingly paid the ultimate price of His own
life to complete the Divine Exchange. True greatness is demonstrated
through sacrifice. |
