PRAYING TO OVERCOME

By Dr. Barry L. Davis

The following are examples of prayers that you can pray when dealing with difficult circumstances:

A PRAYER FOR DEALING WITH SIN YOU CANNOT OVERCOME:

Father,

I know ____________ is a sin and grieves Your heart, yet I have tried to stop so many times and failed. I know it does not honor You to continue and that You want me to stop. So if I'm ever going to stop ____________, You are going to have to give me the ability and willpower. So I'm asking that the next time I'm tempted to ____________, that the Holy Spirit will remind me that this is a sin and then give me the courage and power to resist the temptation to ____________.

Amen

A PRAYER TO LET GO OF PAST PAIN:

Father,

It is sometimes so difficult to know how to handle ____________. Show me how to think about it. What scriptural principle(s) should I be applying? You know how hurt I get in such situations. You know how difficult it is for me to stop thinking about what has happened. Help! I need Your control, Your perspective.

Amen

A PRAYER TO FORGIVE DIFFICULT PEOPLE:

Father,

I come to You with all the hurt I feel toward ____________. You know how much I have been wounded by what he/she has done. In my own flesh and strength I cannot forgive him/her. But I know You want me to, and so I choose to forgive him/her by an act of my will in obedience to You and not based on my feelings. Heal my emotions and help my feelings come into alignment with what I have chosen to do now. Let me not only feel forgiveness for ____________, but let me also start to see him/her as You see him/her. Let me care about him/her as You love him/her.

Amen
